It rained overnight, but had the decency to clear up in time for us to set off again in the morning, through more locks.

Filling a lock - see how manfully Mr B-D looks after the boat? |
And finally, we got to the Oundle Cruising Club grounds, at Oundle Marina, where we were allowed to stay for the night. Having got as far as we had intended on this holiday, we had a wander around the marina and chandlery and then spent a lazy afternoon and evening in the sun.

John managed some fishing |
Next morning we started our journey back. We originally thought we'd stay at Wansford, but the moorings were full, and it was still quite early in the day, so we continued. Then we thought we'd stop near Alwalton lock, as another boater in a lock told us that we could walk to the local pub. Unfortunately, we didn't understand his instructions, and having gone through the lock instead of mooring in the cut alongside it, we decided we were blowed if we were going back through it again! So, we pushed on towards Peterborough.

The man at the lock also told us we could moor at Thorpe Meadows on the outskirts of Peterborough, which was a small lake, entered through a small cut off the main river. There was a pub serving meals and a hotel with a restaurant nearby, and was a great place to stop.

Peterborough's very dilapidated rowing lake - the boats row on the river instead |
